"Beppu Onsen" is proud of being the largest in Japan, for the number of both hot spring wells and the yield of hot water.
Eight Onsen areas called, "Beppu Hattou" is forming the Best Onsen District on the land of 7km (4.3 miles), spreading through "Tsurumi Renzan" (Mount Tsurumi) to "Beppu-wan" (Beppu Bay).
Each area of the eight has its original onsen welling up with a good quality and even has its own way of taking onsen. "Beppu no Jigoku" (Hell of Beppu), where you can make a trip to all eight onsen areas, is also popular.
The abundant resources of onsen that has been used for a spa, since Heian-era, are also being used for medical treatment or geothermal studies, besides taking a bath.
They hold "Beppu Onsen Hattou Festival" at the beginning of April every year, where anybody can take onsen for free in 100 onsen places in the city, or there is a fire festival. Many people all over Japan visit here to join this exciting event.
